In praise of the OS maps app.

Steve Butterfield

In these uncertain and difficult times, I think everyone recognises that getting out and going for a wander is great for the mind and great for the body.

But, in this time of National lockdown we are limited to our local area.

So, to our rescue is the OS maps app.

It has allowed me to plan walks from my from door  and back again.  It has allowed me to plan the walks easily on my iPad or iPhone or on my laptop and see how far the route would be. I can easily follow the planned route on my phone or record a new route as we walk. I can walk on roads, across  Milton Park, pick up public footpaths or the Salt line or Borrow pits or the Merelake Way. I,  (or should I say we, as Gill comes as well) have discovered paths around Alsager that we didn’t know existed, such as the Donkey path that leads to the station from the old Twyfords entrance. There is also a section of the market town trail that start by the Wilbraham arms on Sandbach road North. These paths area joy to walk on.

We can vary the length of the walk and the surfaces we walk on; solid paths like the salt line or venture across the fields depending on the weather and how we are feeling that day.  I have saved some walks on the app, so when we can venture slightly further afield when the restrictions are eased you can enjoy the walks as well.Just park on the Cedar road car park or at the bottom of Station road Alsager.

So, a huge thank you to Alan for organising the group subscription to OS maps. (If you were not aware of it - please contact Alan Edwards who, I’m sure will be happy to give you details).

If you were wondering where to walk and found you were walking on the same paths that you always have done, why not have a look at the OS maps app and see whether you could plan walks from your doorstep as well.

Happy wandering,
